University Policy 91
Progress Towards Degree

University Policy 91 outlines university-wide minimum criteria to determine if students are making satisfactory progress towards the completion of their degrees. The ECE Department fully supports the policy. Specific expectations for satisfactory progress for Electrical Engineering majors are as follows:

ECE Degrees

In order to enter this restricted major, students must have:

  • Minimum 2.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA
  • Minimum grade of C- or better in ENGE 1215 and ENGE 1216
  • Minimum grade of D- or better in CHEM 1035, CHEM 1045, ENGL 1105, ENGL 1106, MATH 1225, MATH 1226, and PHYS 2305

All ECE courses require a C- or better in prerequisite courses.

Free electives or Area 6 courses offered on a Pass/Fail only basis may be taken under the Pass/Fail grading option.

Cumulative/overall and in-major GPAs of 2.0 or higher are required for graduation. In determining the EE in-major GPA, all ECE courses, including repeats, are used. CS 1044, if taken before Fall 2004, will also count in the in major GPA calculation.

Non-degree courses are those which do not satisfy graduation requirements, including free electives. The list of non-degree courses includes all courses on the "Non-Degree Credit Courses" list which is updated annually and published on the College of Engineering Undergraduate Academic Affairs website at www.eng.vt.edu.

NOTE: Students that have completed all of the required coursework and have a 3.0 or higher Virginia Tech GPA are guaranteed this major. Change of Major applications are accepted prior to the beginning of fall, spring, and summer at: Changing majors

Foreign Language Requirements: Students must have had 2 years of a foreign language in high school or one year at the college level (6 credit hours) of the same language. College-level credits used to meet this requirement do not count towards the degree.

A total of 132 credits are required for graduation with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering.
