ECE 4374 Power System Protection Laboratory (1C)

Experimental verification of principles and practice of protective relaying. Experiments and design projects to demonstrate the principles and techniques of industrial power system design. Fuses, time overcurrent and instantaneous relays. Differential relaying for transformers. Distance relaying. Current and Voltage transformers.

What is the reason for this course?

This course provides experimental and project oriented verification of principles of industrial system design and power system protection. The laboratory experience will be invaluable to a student who intends to make power engineering his professional career. The course will complement the work done in the parallel course ECE 4354 that deals with the theory of power system protection.

Technical Elective. Typically offered: Spring. Program Area: Power.

Prerequisites: C- or better in 4334. Co-requisite: 4354.

Why are these prerequisites or corequisites required?

This course requires an understanding of the basic principles of power system protection system design. This material is covered in ECE 4354, which is a co-requisite. Also needed is an understanding of power system analysis techniques, which are covered in ECE 4334.
