ECE Student Design Projects:
Competing Robots

Photograph of the IEEE robot

The 2007 IEEE robot is capable of firing ping pong balls into a target.

"The IEEE hardware team is a wonderful experience which allows us to apply classroom concepts while exploring realms beyond pre-made academic oriented design projects. We get the opportunity to deal with all aspects of a real design & implementation problem whichever way we see fit."

-Daniel Borba, CpE '08 and Hardware Team Member

Each year competing teams from schools in the Southeast Region of the IEEE (ECE professional society) design and build a robot for the SoutheastCon Hardware Design Competition in the spring.

VT IEEE Hardware Team 2008

The Virginia Tech IEEE Student Branch organizes and sponsors Tech's team. The 2008 competition, "Return to the Moon," will involve designing a robot with the objective of collecting as many 2-inch wooden cubes as possible, each color coded and marked with RFID tags, within six minutes. Points are awarded based on the color of the block and the encoded RFID tags.
