From the Department Head...

In 1995, Virginia Tech officially announced its most ambitious fund-raising campaign in history. The Campaign for Virginia Tech is an important step toward shaping and expressing the future distinction, vitality, character and life of the University. The College of Engineering is responsible for $50 million of the campaign's goal of $250 million.

To date, the College has raised $49.5 million through the generous support of our alumni and friends. Although we are very proud of this accomplishment, we still need to strive for higher levels. The major national institutions with which we compete for students, faculty, research funding, and corporate and foundation support are not standing still; several are engaged in capital campaigns of their own. At the Department level, our needs are still great. The Department is growing rapidly, and with this growth comes a need for further financial resources. Several examples of programs and activities that could benefit from funds designated directly to The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are featured in this newsletter, including the Virtual Corporations and the Women in Computing initiatives.

In addition to these programs, we have launched the Alliance for Excellence in Education, which partners students with companies in an effort to increase the number of Bradley Scholarships/Fellowships available to electrical and computer engineering students and to provide summer employment and recruiting opportunities for partner organizations.

The new engineering building is a top priority in the Campaign for Virginia Tech. The Department has several laboratories in the new building that are in serious need of equipment. Investments in the new engineering building will enrich the intellectual life of the College and the broad community it serves for years to come.

ECE alumni and friends have the opportunity to direct gifts to The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering by designating this support of the Department on the check and pledge card. Please keep this in mind this fall during the phon-a-thon or at the time of your annual gift. Donors have unlimited opportunities to help shape the Department's future through specific philanthropic investments. Many giving opportunities create a partnership between alumni and the Department by providing financial support for students, faculty programs, and facilities, while creating tax savings and financial planning opportunities for donors. As always, we appreciate your support. Your gifts have a direct impact on the quality of educational programs we can offer our students.
