ECE 4606 Radio Engineering (3C)

Wireless application circuit design for gain and filter control at radio frequencies to interface the baseband processing systems and the antennas of communication systems. 4606: Design of amplitude, frequency, and pulse-modulated communication systems, including modulators, detectors, and the effects of noise. Design basics and guidelines for phaselocked loops and several power amplifier configurations.

What is the reason for this course?

The second course uses these circuits in communication systems and discusses the principles of operation of several common systems. This course also considers the design of power amplifiers, which are the workhorses of communication systems.

Technical Elective. Typically offered: Spring. Program Area: Communications.

Prerequisites: C- or better in 4605.

Why are these prerequisites or corequisites required?

4675. The necessary background consists of devices, biasing, and basic low frequency amplifiers concepts, as well as some basic transmission line and Smith chart principles. A student should be able to bias a transistor circuit and analyze its basic low frequency performance. They should also be able to analyze basic networks and their general frequency performance (as covered in 3204). It is critical that they have a basic understanding of 2-port equivalent circuits and related modeling as presented in 3204 and prerequisites. They should also be able to model short sections of transmission line as corresponding inductors and capacitors as well as represent impedance transformations on the Smith chart as covered in 3106. The basic concepts of AM and FM as covered in 3614 as assumed as the basis of discussing the circuit implementation of the circuits. The co-requisite is the laboratory component of this class -- an integral component of the lab and lecture combination (4605 and 4675 are co-requisites for each other). 4605 is a prerequisite for 4606 as denoted by the numbering scheme. Much of the material of 4606 is based on the design and processes presented in 4605.
