ECE 4354 Power System Protection (3C)
Protection of power apparatus and systems. Fuses. Voltage and current transducers. Relays, Coordination of Relays. Pilot channels. Grounding practices. Surge phenomena. Insulation coordination.
What is the reason for this course?
This course covers the subject of protection of power systems against faults and transient overvoltages. It is supported by a concurrent laboratory where related experiments are performed. Together, these two courses will provide the students a comprehensive treatment of the theory and practice of relaying. Also surge phenomena and protection practices against surges will be covered in this course.
Technical Elective. Typically offered: Spring. Program Area: Power.
Prerequisites: C- or better in 4334.
Why are these prerequisites or corequisites required?
The concepts of power system analysis developed in EE 4334 are essential for the understanding of power system protection taught in this course.
Department Syllabus Information:
Major Measurable Learning Objectives:- Analyze the performance of power system transducers
- Apply the fundamental principles of power system protective devices.
- Design the primary and backup protection systems.
- Design a coordinated protection system for a network
