Workshop on the Role of Design in Wearable Computing

held in conjunction with
International Symposium on Wearable Computers
Pittsburgh, PA
October 1, 2008
and
organized by Tom Martin.

This workshop will provide a forum to discuss the role of design in wearable computing.  Wearable computing spans a broad range of interests and expertise, not all of which can be adequately represented by a technical paper in an IEEE Computer Society proceedings.  As wearable computing becomes more mainstream and if it is to continue becoming more mainstream, it is important for ISWC to provide appropriate venues for presenting the latest advances in textile, fashion, and industrial design. The objective of this workshop is to come up with a set of recommendations on what the appropriate venues should be and to discuss what the important design issues are for wearable computing.

Call for papers for the design workshop
Important dates:
Paper submissions due:  August 15
Acceptance notification: No later than August 25
Final versions due: September 16
Workshop: October 1
Papers submitted to the workshop must not be under review by any other conference or publication during the review cycle, and must not be previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere. Accepted papers will be published in PDF format on the ISWC web site.

At last year's workshop, there was a strong desire for a juried design exhibit.  This year we will hold the first ISWC Juried Design Competition, which is being organized by Tom Martin and Lucy Dunne.   The competition is for original works of wearable computing. Submissions to the competition may comprise any type of technology for wearable computing (electronic, mechanical, textile, etc.), and designers are encouraged to submit works of practical  technology as well as works of art.  These works may be new, or may have been reported previously at ISWC or other venues, so long as they are the original work of the designer(s).   The three top entries will be selected by a panel of judges.
