Faculty Members Conducting Research in Electromagnetics

Virginia Tech Antenna Group (VTAG website)

VTAG Anechoic Chamber

Equipped with more than 30 years experience in the field and state-of-the-art CAD tool and measurement facilities, VTAG's mission is to assist industry with research and development in antennas, propagation, and communication systems. Areas of special interest are: wideband antennas and arrays, small antennas, antennas for unlicensed band applications, smart antennas, vehicular antennas, personal antennas, ultrawideband antennas and systems, and customer application-specific wireless communication systems.

Dusty Plasma Lab ( website)

EIH instability in a dusty plasma (with high charging)

The study of dusty plasmas has a broad range of applications including interplanetary space dust, comets, planetary rings, dusty surfaces in space, and aerosols in the atmosphere.

ElectroMagnetic Interactions Laboratory (EMIL website)

EMIL is devoted to the computationally intensive analysis of problems involving the interaction of electromagnetic fields with the natural environment.

Fiber & Electro-Optics Research Center (FEORC website)

FEORC has been involved in research to treat SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

The Fiber & Electro-Optics Research Center is a high-tech center for the study of fiber optics, electro-optics, optical materials, thin films and other highly advanced technologies.

Optical Image Processing Laboratory (OIP Lab website)

The laboratory studies all aspects of hybrid (optical/electronic/digital) information processing technology, including 3-D display, microscopy, and recognition, optical scanning holography, optical scanning cryptography, and acousto-optics.

Center for Photonics Technology (CPT website)

CPT conducts research into all major aspects concerning photonic sensors, including new sensing mechanisms, materials, thin films, fiber modifications, advanced packaging, optoelectronic signal processing, and instrumentation systems. The center is known for its development of innovative photonic sensors for use in harsh environments.

Time Domain and RF Measurement Laboratory

The main research interest of the Microwave Characterization Group at Virginia Tech is in the area of wideband measurements and characterization problems using time domain and frequency domain techniques.

Wireless Microsystems Laboratory (WML website)

5-6 GHz SiGe subharmonic direct-conversion receiver front-end IC

The focus of this laboratory is the exploration of ideas and technologies that enable integrated microsystems, in particular microsystems that are connected to the information infrastructure via wireless communications links. Research topics of interest include: RF/Microwave/millimeter-wave integrated circuits and antennas; mixed-signal ICs; high-speed interconnects and packaging; micro/nano-machining and MEMS/NEMS devices; solid-state devices/technology and nanotechnology; and wireless communications and sensor applications.
