Description of ECE computer engineering research from the 2003 Annual Report. (1.6 MB)

Faculty Members Conducting Research in Computer Engineering

Research in Computer Engineering (CPE) spans a broad range of interests, from device physics to natural language analysis. The common thread in these activities is computation.

Computational systems may be application-specific or general-purpose; they may operate in isolation or in networks; they may be constructed with an emphasis on high performance or small size or low power consumption. Increasingly, systems are developed with a goal of interacting with the external world through wireless links, and through sensors and actuators.

Current research activities
in the department can be grouped into four broad areas:

In addition to the research groups in each area, most faculty members in computer engineering are associated with VISC– The Virginia Tech Information Systems Center (see below).

Virginia Tech Information Systems Center (VISC website)

VISC brings together faculty and researchers from several departments who have common interest in the design and advanced application of information systems. Research endeavors include computer vision and image processing, computer networks, system modeling and synthesis, design automation, VLSI design and testing, configurable computing, and embedded systems. Most of the computer engineering laboratories are VISC associates.
