Rick Claus, the Lewis E. Hestor Professor of Engineering, received the 2005 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award, which is the highest honor for faculty members at Virginia's colleges and universities. The awards recognize superior teaching, research, and public service. Claus, who serves as associate director of the Applied Biomedical Center and director of the Fiber and Electro-Optics Research Center (FEORC) was recognized for his impact on students, research accomplishments, and outreach activities. Claus has served as principal investigator on more than 500 separate research projects totaling almost $35 million. Claus' work with students has resulted in 20 spin-off firms that employ more than 200 Virginians.
