Jeffrey Reed has been named the Willis G. Worcester Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The professorship is typically awarded to a leading researcher. Worcester was the Virginia Tech dean who played an important role in the university’s transition from a primarily undergraduate institution to a research university.
Reed came to Tech in 1992 and has built a reputation in wireless communications. He has been a principal investigator on 55 sponsored projects, with his share reaching about $7 million.He has authored 35 journal articles and contributed to or edited 15 books. He is the sole author of the first book on software radio and his group last year released the world’s first open-source implementation of the defacto industry standard for software radio design. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
