Hyde Tucker Inducted into College Academy of Excellence

Hyde Tucker (EE ‘56)was inducted into the College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence.
Hyde Tucker (EE, ‘56) was inducted this spring into the College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence for sustained and meritorious engineering and leadership contributions during his career. He was one of seven alumni out of more than 40,000 who were inducted into the academy this year.

Tucker, a retired former president and CEO of Bell Atlantic International, has served as a long-time leader both in his field and at Tech. After graduating 17th in his class out of 444 engineering students, Tucker took a position with the C&P Telephone Company. He remained in communications for the rest of his career, even during a four-year stint in the U.S. Air Force.

Tucker served in increasingly responsible positions at C&P and at parent Bell Atlantic. While serving as vice president for C&P West Virginia, the firm’s net income grew by $10.3 million in under four years. He also served as vice president for information systems, vice president for finance and special assignment for the Bell Atlantic system.

In 1989 he was named vice president and chief operating officer for C&P Telephone Companies and in 1990 became president and CEO of Bell Atlantic International. In 1992, he was appointed vice president of operations and engineering for Bell Atlantic, then he retired in 1995.

Tucker has been an active alumnus. He has served on the college’s Committee of 100 and has directed the college’s Marketing Committee. He led the volunteer efforts of engineering alumni during Tech’s most recent capital campaign, which exceeded its goal by 33 percent.

He served as one of the 10 founding members of the ECE Advisory Board from 1991-1994 and is serving a second term since 2000. In 1998, Tucker received the College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award, and in 2002 received the Distinguished Service Award.
