6:30 PM - 9:00 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2014
Location: Holiday Inn, Blacksburg
Craig Woolsey, of aerospace and ocean engineering at Virginia Tech, will be the speaker.
Abstract: The presentation will begin with an overview of research activities within the Virginia Center for Autonomous Systems. The focus will then shift to the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, led by Virginia Tech, and the FAA Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Test Site that this partnership serves. With the aim of helping integrate UAS into the national airspace system for civilian and commercial uses, the UAS Test Site offers important research and economic development opportunities for Virginia and its partner states, New Jersey and Maryland. The aim of the presentation is to describe some of these opportunities and to invite a larger discussion.
Speaker Bio: Craig Woolsey is an associate professor in the aerospace and ocean engineering department and the assistant department head for graduate studies. His research and teaching focus is mechanical system dynamics and control theory. His primary research interest is the development and validation of control methodologies to improve performance and robustness of autonomous vehicles, particularly ocean and atmospheric vehicles. Dr. Woolsey teaches graduate level courses in linear and nonlinear control theory and undergraduate courses in control and aircraft dynamics. Woolsey completed a bachelors of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech in 1995 (highest honors, cooperative plan) and a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University in 2001. He joined the Virginia Tech faculty in January 2001. In 2002, Dr. Woolsey received the NSF Career Award and the ONR Young Investigator Program Award. Woolsey also received the 2008 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He is the founding Director of the Virginia Center for Autonomous Systems, an interdisciplinary research center focused on the development and application of autonomous systems technology. Craig Woolsey is an Associate Fellow of AIAA, a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ASEE, IFAC, and SAE.
