Lester guest edits Special Topics Journal on Semiconductor Lasers

Luke Lester, ECE department head, served as the primary guest editor for the recent IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics (JSTQE) issue on semiconductor lasers.

The issue recognizes the 50th anniversary of the invention of the semiconductor laser in 1962 with a series of papers that answer: "What is a laser, circa 2012?" The articles explore non-classical light sources, diode laser oscillators, and the laser threshold.

A second theme for the issue is laser dynamics, which is examined in the context of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), mode-locked lasers, quantum dot emitters, and other laser cavities and geometries.

The Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics is published bimonthly by the IEEE Photonics Society, with issues covering specific topics in quantum electronics such as biophotonics, silicon photonics, and optical communications. The July/August issue contains 31 invited and 58 contributed papers written by leading photonics researchers, including three articles co-authored by Lester. Lester also served as a guest editor for the journal's two previous issues on semiconductor lasers.

Lester has 28 years of experience in research and development of III-V semiconductor devices. He was an engineer for the General Electric Electronics Laboratory and he cofounded a successful semiconductor laser manufacturing company that produces quantum dot lasers for communications and microprocessor applications. As a doctoral student, Lester served on the team that developed the first strained quantum-well lasers with mm-wave bandwidths, which became the industry standard for optical transmitters in data and telecommunications.

In 2013, Lester was named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to quantum dot lasers. He was also promoted as an SPIE Fellow in recognition of his achievements in optoelectronics and semiconductor lasers.

Lester joined the Virginia Tech faculty in August 2013. He received his B.S. in engineering physics in 1984 and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1992, both from Cornell University.
