Fully-distributed sensing platform

The Center for Photonics Technology was recently awarded a three-year project by the National Science Foundation to developing a fully distributed fiber-optic chemical and biological sensing platform.

This platform, according to ECE’s Anbo Wang, “can detect and monitor a variety of chemicals and biological agents continuously along the fiber and can cover a large spatial range.” These fibers can operate continuously over hundreds of meters, and they provide high sensitivity at a low cost. “This platform,” Wang continues, “is particularly attractive for applications such as pollution detection in rivers and lakes; chemical-bio terrorism agent detection in stadiums, airports, buildings, and other public venues; and hydrogen detection in today’s aerospace fuel tanks and tomorrow’s hydrogen stations and factories.”
