Trew to Head ECE
Robert Trew has been selected
to serve as ECE department head starting July 1.
Trew comes to Virginia Tech from the U.S. Department of Defense,
where he served for three years as director for research. In
this position, he was responsible for providing scientific leadership,
management oversight, policy guidance, and coordination of the
$1.3 billion annual basic research programs of the Military Services
and Defense Agencies. He has also served as a part time program
manager for five years in the electronics division of the U.S.
Army Research Office.
From 1993 to 1997, Trew was chair of the Department of Electrical
Engineering and Applied Physics at Case Western Reserve University.
Before that, he was a professor of electrical and computer engineering
at North Carolina State University.
His industrial experience includes working as an engineer for
General Motors and Watkins-Johnson Company and consultant for
a number of aerospace and electronics companies.
Trew is the editor of the IEEE Microwaves Magazine and has served
as editor of the IEEE Transactions of Microwave Theory and Techniques.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE. He has published more than 130 technical
articles and 13 book chapters. He has two patents awarded and
two pending.
He earned his Ph.D. (1975) and his M.S. degrees from the University
of Michigan. He earned a B.S. from Kettering University.
