Ryan Fong, CpE '01

Research Activities: Undergraduate research assistant in the Configurable Computing Laboratory. He is currently involved in the development of a secure software radio on a configurable computing platform.
Career Aspirations: Continue in MS/BS program; do graduate work in embedded systems. Earn an MBA and "start my own company."
Most Memorable Experience: helping with First Lego League Competition. "It was refreshing to see children at the middle school age and younger having fun with their hands-on experience with modern technology."

Brian Gold, EE '01
Newport News, VA, Double major in applied mathematics.
Hatcher Scholarship (Mathematics); IEEE student paper award (1999).
Industrial Experience: Worked part time at Wireless Valley Communications. Led new project development, including patents, design, development, and support of new product line on Palm PDA's.
Career Aspirations: "To build a high tech startup company (or two) in the New River Valley."

Matt C. Helton, EE '01

Industrial Experience: Three summers at Federal Pacific Transformer Co., Bristol, VA. "I learned how to deal with people while practicing my profession in a production environment."
Most Memorable Experience: Learning basic electrical systems (transistors, op-amps, diodes).

Internship: Quality assurance/software development internship at Group Logic, Inc., a software company. "This triggered my decision to go into software with a focus on design."
Career Aspirations: Work in corporate software development and design focusing on program design and project management.
Most Memorable Experience: Moderating a freshman honors reading group. The experience and discussions were "what I expected back in high school that college would be: a Mecca of minds meeting."

Chris Twaddle, CpE '01

Co-op Assignments: IBM, three sessions. He is currently working with engineers to validate microcontroller cores. "In my digital design class, we discussed large scale logic design and testing. In this position, I am able to learn and help with the design process."
Career Aspirations: Logic design of microcontrollers or ASICs
Most Exciting Experience: Traveling to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.

Mechanicsville, VA. Co-op: Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division. "With these co-ops, I have furthered my understanding of electronic components and circuits through humanitarian demining efforts and other similar projects. In less than 6 months, I was managing a team for a market investigation."

Jonathan Graf, CpE '02

Golden Key; national Society of Collegiate Scholars Honor Society; Honors Program; Habitat for Humanity.
Internships: Intel-3D graphics hardware design engineer; Sprint -Telecommunications network design engineer; TREEV, Inc.-web programmer.
Career Aspirations: Microprocessor design.

Projects: Member of high voltage group for first place winning hybrid electric car team.

Internship: University of Rhode Island, Graduate School of Oceanography. Redesigned web page for the Distributed Oceanographic Data System and develop a web interface that dynamically displays data based on information discovered about remote datasets.

Internships: Credence Systems Corp., Hillsboro, OR. Co-designed manufacturing test bench to reduce analog module testing from one week to half a day. GE Fanuc. Tested and troubleshot analog modules; lead technician for EMC and UL testing.

Design Project: FIRST robotics class, helping high school students build a robot for competition. In addition to being able to apply classroom knowledge, "I had the chance to see other areas of engineering in action."

Career Aspirations: Graphic acceleration of devices beyond the 2D CRT, working towards creating an actual 3D computer-generated environment.
Most Memorable Experience: Introduction to Computer Engineering. "There's something extremely gratifying about building your first processor, however simple, and programming in assembly language for the first time."

Most Fun Experience: Using a pencil box trainer kit for Intro to CpE class. "Being able to sit down and wire circuits to perform the desired results has given me the type of hands-on learning that I enjoy."

Internship: Black & Decker. "I learned about AC motor windings and unit testing. It was interesting to learn the more practical side of engineering, away from the theory. Still, I found that the theory was also frequently applied in the planning and development phases."
