Question: The timing window in LW5 no longer has a "slider bar" that permits me to move around on the timing displays. This is despite showing a timing window slider bar in a LW4 screen shot on page 22 of the LW5 manual. This is a problem. For example, a circuit can be simulated for a long time. If it runs long enough, the "early" timing data may be scrolled off the left hand side of the timing window. I can not find a way to "slide" the window back in order to display the earlier times. I could do this on LW4. How do I do it now? This is very inconvenient and will be a source of frustration to my students.
The timing module was rewritten quite extensively to incorporate the VHDL and other new features, so some defaults may have changed. We are still fine-tuning this a bit based on feedback from users. The default is now to keep timing information in memory only as needed to refresh the screen. If you go to the Simulation/Simulation Options command, select the Timing tab and select "keep forever", it will then retain data for as long as the simulation runs. This setting is saved with the design, so would have to be set for each design. The scroll bar is displayed only when the simulation is stopped, as in the previous version. We may add an option to change the default for this setting.
Question: Why was information removed from the LW5 manual about timing file input and outputs? It appears LW5 still supports these features but I can not find any reference to them in the manual. Have I missed something or do I need to write my own documentation (based on the LW4 appendix) to give to my class? Again, an annoyance.
A decision was made with the publisher to make the printed manual
more of an introductory guide and include less-used reference information
in electronic form. The timing import format is included in the reference
manual that is in PDF format with the program. From within the program,
you can select the Help/Help Docs/LogicWorks 5 Reference and look for Appendix
D. This manual was updated with the update patch for version 5.0b9,
so if you're using an older version, you should use the Check for Updates
command to download the latest version.
